What Is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is also trained to diagnose and solve problems associated with the jaws and teeth, such as overcrowding, open bites and crossbites, crowded or gapped teeth and jaws that don’t meet correctly (malocclusions), which can lead to poor dental health and appearance.

They do this by conducting a thorough examination of the mouth, which can include panoramic X-rays and study models (bite impressions), in order to create a treatment plan that is unique to each patient. The orthodontist then applies braces or other orthodontic appliances to correct the malocclusions, and monitors their progress until they have achieved the desired results.

During treatment, the orthodontist will also take measures to ensure that the new alignment of the teeth and jaws will last, even after the removal of braces. This is accomplished by providing the patient with a retainer, which keeps the teeth from shifting back to their original state.

A retainer must be worn regularly, usually every day except when eating or drinking. This will help the patients maintain a healthy, straight smile for life.

While dentists are the primary care providers for patients’ tooth and gum health, they may refer their patients to an orthodontist if there is a problem that they can’t deal with. This is often the case when a malocclusion or overcrowding requires the use of unobtrusive devices and treatments, such as palate expanders, to make room for adult teeth. In addition, dental experts recommend that children be assessed by an orthodontist before the age of seven to determine whether they will need braces in the future. This is because the growing jaws of children are softer and easier to manipulate than those of adults. This makes the intervention of an orthodontist more effective and less invasive. Orthodontists are also skilled at diagnosing a wide array of other facial irregularities, which they can then treat accordingly. Orthodontic treatment can significantly improve the appearance and function of your smile, and can give you the confidence to show it off with pride.
